I will never forget the memorable stay I experienced at Backcountry Outfitters. The modern, recently-built log cabin was cozy and accommodating. Watching the sun rise over the picturesque horizon, while sitting on the deck relaxing, enjoying a cup of coffee, and listening to the pheasants cackle was an irreplaceable experience.
The home-cooked meals were plentiful! Dan and Lindsey made sure we never left for a day of hunting with an empty stomach.
Once we got out into the fields, we were guided by Dan, who was very experienced and made sure we had access to plenty of birds. We also had the privilege of hunting with a well-trained hunting dog. We had great walking conditions and an abundance of birds.

I was in the area with John Gosselin (Publisher of Upland Almanac) hunting in November 2006, since John was writing an area report on South Dakota. Backcountry Outiftters were gracious enough to host us and stay at The Chalets for 4 days. Read the review of Backcountry Outfitters at:
The Ultimate Pheasant Hunt: Backcountry Outfitters.
The Experience: The stay, the hunt, & the scenery with Backcountry Outfitters was unreal. Waking up each morning below the Buttes, listening to the roosters cackle as I am sipping my coffee with my feet up on the porch of the Chalets... quite the vacation from sitting in front of my computer at the office!
The Food: We were fed generously by Lindsay (who is a excellent cook) and we got a wide variety of fixings in addition to the main course. My stomach was usually chock-full after the meals because I had to clean everyone elses plate up, including the apple and cherry pies.
Sporting Clays: Each morning, we warmed up with sporting clays in between the Butte's... that was pretty cool scenery!
The Hunt: I had a good time hunting with our small group and Dan as our guide. I got some tough shooting in with my Benelli and even missed a few as I got hassled from the group for the misses. We only hunted one day with Backcountry Outfitters and I couldn't wait to get back and sit on the porch at The Chalets and crack a beer to celebrate our first day of pheasant hunting heaven.
Dogs: We didn't bring any dogs out with us, so Dan brought his dog. What a treat. It was really exciting to see Dan's dog work as we would have missed a few of the birds we walked by if it wasn't for his Chocolate Lab. We were at the end of the field and Dan yelled at me to be ready... sure enough, the dog was right on it.
The Brand New Lodges: The Chalets were first-class with the flat screen TV's, kitchen, leather couches & decorations. What a excellent place to stay.
Re-Visit: I can't wait to stay their this summer when I come out praire dog hunting and fish for some walleyes!
